St George, Morebath

Worship

St George’s church is open to visitors daily from 9am to 6pm.

At 11.00am on the second Sunday of each month there is Holy Communion and throughout the year we celebrate Easter, Harvest and Christmas. St. George’s Day is remembered each April and local Scouts join in with the special service.

History

Many centuries of history are held in St George’s Church. Dating back to 13th century, much of the present building comes from 15th century and the restoration work of William Butterfield in the 1870s.

The book by Eamon Duffy Voices of Morebath sheds light on the Reformation in the writings of Sir Christopher Trychay, appointed as priest to our church 1520 to 1574. While nearly everything has changed since, we keep the sense of the church being a special place to step aside from the business of life and spend time close to God.

The bells are rung by a team of local bellringers.

Events

We celebrated the 500 year anniversary with an open-air service held during Covid restrictions.

The local community has shared in Harvest celebrations and raising of funds for local charity CHAT (Churches Housing Action Trust in Tiverton).

Christmas Carols are sung in the local streets.
